僕はたぶん明日発売するJobs伝は原書のKindle版を買うと思う。もちろん邦訳のほうが読むのは楽だけれど、円高の今、原書で1000円弱で買えるものを、4000円出してかつ物理スペースを専有させるのはかなり嫌だから。たぶんこういう人は結構多いんじゃないか。

こういうことを考えると、これからますますリンガ・フランカとしての英語が浸透していくと、コストをかけて英語の実用書やドキュメンタリーを邦訳をすることは長期的に見ると虚しい試みになっていくかもしれないと思ってきたな。なにより、若い人にとっては邦訳本を読むことは自分のスキル向上のためにならないし。もしもこのジョブズ伝を読みたくて仕方ないなら、むしろ読みたい本こそ、原書で読んで自分を鍛えなきゃ。そういったこともあって、僕も邦訳本を出したことがあるけれど、よほどの必要性が無い限り二度と邦訳はやらないと思う。
