Googleは、かつて同社がまだ従業員数80人ほどの知名度の低い新興企業だった時代に、スタンフォード大学の学生に協力してもらい、あるテストを実施したという。その内容は、学生らがGoogleを使って1994年のリレハンメルオリンピックでどの国が最も多くの金メダルを獲得したかをどれだけ容易に検索できるかというものだった。その結果は、学生らがGoogle画面の前に座ったまま、15秒、30秒、45秒、1分・・・と時間だけが経過していき、Googleは当惑してしまった。
たまりかねたMayer氏は、一旦作業を止め、学生らになぜ検索を開始しないのか尋ねた。すると彼らは、「検索ページの他の部分が表示されるのを待っている」と答えた。彼らは、1990年代に他の検索ページに見られた派手なバナー広告や大量のテキストがGoogleの画面にも表示されると考えていたのだ。
その結果を受け、Googleは著作権に関する注意書きをページの最下部に置いた。「法律上の理由でそこに置いたわけではない」とMayer氏は述べ、次のように続けた。「それは、句読点としてそこに存在する。それだけのことだ。『これ以上は何もありません、どうぞ検索を開始してください』という（検索者への）メッセージだ」
